Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain, in 1599.
Though his background was lesser nobility, his family was by no means wealthy.
However, Seville at that time was overflowing with vitality through trade with the New World.
The city was full of art academies, possessing a passion much like Florence during the Renaissance.

His parents recognized his young talent and apprenticed him to the famous painter Pacheco in 1610.
Scholars, poets, and theologians gathered at his master’s home.
Here, he accumulated reliable intellectual culture alongside painting.
In 1617, he launched his career as an independent professional painter.
His master Pacheco trusted him deeply and let him marry his beloved daughter, Juana.
At that time, he demonstrated his true skill in “bodegones” (kitchen scenes), painting kitchens and familiar ingredients.

In 1623, a major turning point arrived.
Through his master’s effort, he obtained the opportunity to paint a portrait of King Philip IV at the age of 24.
The King, who had a deep knowledge of art, recognized his true value at a glance.
The King declared, “From now on, no one other than Velázquez shall paint my portrait.”
Don’t you think that is an unbelievable honor?
He served the royal family for 37 years, producing historic masterpieces in every genre.
However, he was not satisfied with merely being a “court painter.”
In 1649, he departed on his second trip to Italy.
He extended his stay for two and a half years despite repeated orders from the King to return, continuously refining his technique in a free environment.
Why did he continue learning to such an extent?
